Frequently Asked Questions

This page will try to help answer some common questions a new bride and groom might have for their wedding day photographer.

Q. Are you 100% digital and why?

A. I believe that digital photography offers so many advantages to film, that for wedding or event photography, it is THE best option as long as the photographer uses a top-of-the-line digital SLR camera.  I use a Canon 1DMKII SLR that offers exceptional resolution, color balance, speed and flexibility.  The advantage of backing up the images alone is worth the move from film to digital! As it is with film, you and the photographer literally have ONE copy of your pictures on a single roll, I wouldn't risk that as a professional anymore!

Digital allows redundant, perfect copies of the original image captures of YOUR memories.

The other benefits reside in the flexibility of processing to black and white, sepia, cross-processing, or other means AFTER the fact, without extra cost to you.

Other significant benefits include:

Instantly exchangeable film speeds. Inside kissing? Or, outside in the limo?  I can adapt to any environment quicker than you can say 'I do'!  As a film photographer, I would have to reload my film.

The ratio of cost advantage to quantity of shots available to the photographer means more meaningful moments between the two of you!

Size DOES matter!  With an 8-13 Megapixel DSLR cameras we can give you custom art prints up to 20" x 30" that will MAKE you bigger than life!

Q. Do you use a second photographer or an assistant?

A.  Yes, I always use a second photographer unless for some reason you opt not to have one.  It allows different perspectives AND it becomes a great backup to my limited ability to be in one place at one time...as well as it is a BIG time saver for setting up certain equipment on a day that has very limited time available to begin with. Why NOT pay one price for TWO photographers?

Q. How long until I receive my images?

A.  Due to the fact that I take extensive care to ensure your wedding photographs are of the utmost quality, and because there is usually a great quantity of pictures taken, it generally takes a few weeks for delivery of proofs.  I do promise (contractually) that your proofs are posted no later than 4 weeks after your wedding date.  Depending on when your wedding takes place, you may receive them as early as 2 weeks after.

Q. What are "Digital Negatives"? Can I print my own pictures?

A. "Digital negatives" is really a carry-over term from the 'good-old' film days.  This term is essentially referencing the high resolution files from the digital camera (similar to film negatives).  These files are not made smaller for web publishing.  They are NOT proofs!

Purchasing this option allows you to print any of the images from your wedding day at your own choice of photo labs. More importantly it is a DVD backup of all your images in an uncompressed format allowing for larger reprints.

You will also receive a release form from 'John Hanson Photography', allowing unconditional printing rights (for your own personal use) at your favorite photo lab.  The files are provided conveniently on DVD!   I also provide a list of photo labs that excel in the processing of prints for you.

Q. How long have you been photographing weddings professionally?

A. This is my 4th year in business as a full time wedding photographer and I'm happier than ever!

Q. Are you difficult to work with?

A. Absolutely!!  Just kidding :)

Q. Do I need to feed you?

A. No! It is very appreciated if you do, but it is not expected. If you do decide to feed us, I can guarantee the reception photos will be much more energetic! Please, just let us know if we need to bring our own Spam sandwiches :)

Q. How long do the prints last?

A. The prints are printed by a hand picked, professional photo lab using a traditional 'silver halide' process that is rated to last at least 80 years.  They produce beautifully processed prints as well as providing 'archival quality' by using the best papers in the market 'Fuji Crystal Archive Professional' papers.

This exceptional photo lab only deals with professional photographers and they produced an excellent product.  As an added bonus they are located in the Twin Cities, MN area in St. Paul, MN which means faster turn-around!!  This means that you have a lot of options from mounted prints, to metallic prints, sprayed and textured, luster or glossy, it's up to you.

Q. Why should I hire you to photograph my wedding?

A. You shouldn't hire me unless YOU know the reason!  I'm hoping you see my style as a fit for your wedding day.

Some of the reasons that other couples have hired me can be understood by my
wedding photographer reviews found here More importantly you should like my style of photography.

Q. What kind of albums do you offer?

A.  Wedding Albums can be a very difficult items to purchase. Especially, without fully understanding all of the album options available.

I recommend and mostly offer digitally designed, flush mount albums by the best in the photographic industry.  A flush mount, digitally designed album format affords a very powerful means to present your photos in a complete and moving story.  In my opinion It is the only format that allows total freedom of the 'story telling'.  I do also offer traditional matted albums if you MUST have one :)
